Character: Meru
Fandom/Series: The Legend of Dragoon
Original or Alternate Universe: Original Universe
Canon Used: Video Game
Age: Her true age is unknown, as her species ages differently than Humans, though she looks to be around 16.
Gender: Female
Species: Wingly
Appearance:

Something that is not made quite obvious in this picture is how small Meru is; she stands just around 5 feet tall and has a very petite frame - appearing to be in her teens to most who meet her. Another thing of note is that in the land of Endiness, it is only the Wingly species that bears the platinum hair and the deep red irises she has inherited.
However, since it has been over 10,000 years since Winglies last moved freely about the land, no Humans seem to recall this information and are merely intrigued, assuming she comes from a country they have never visited.
Her clothes are scant due to her profession as a dancer; she prefers being able to move freely about without the restraint that too much fitted fabric can bring. Her trusty maul is always on her person, as Endiness is a land filled with aggressive creatures between its cities that will attack at any moment.
Personality:
Meru is a Wingly anomaly; most of her species vehemently stick to the ways of old - back from the Dragon Campaign which occurred over 10,000 years prior - and follow all of the Ancestor’s commandments without question. She, however, has an insatiable curiosity and refuses to simply believe everything she has been taught and told. Rather than just relying on the words of her parents, elders, and the Ancestor, Meru wants to see the world! She wants to live her own way and learn about Humans and the rest of Endiness by experience; she doesn’t want to stay cooped up in the Forest of the Winglies forever, although it is taboo to leave.
Meru wants to know if Humans are as bad as everyone says, or if they have managed to change in the thousands of years that have passed since the great battle. She is deterred by nothing and no one; once Meru sets her mind to something, she does it without much thought. Spontaneous, almost dangerously so, she is determined and does not hesitate; she merely acts on impulse.
Quirky and proud, Meru is a hard one to beat down. She is confident and a little full of herself, but not in a way that causes her to look down on others - just in a way that she talks herself up and finds no qualms with gloating or boasting about any of her good traits or abilities. Upon introduction, she proudly boasts that she is the best dancer in all of Endiness in a way that says she truly believes it.
Other than being a host to curiosity, spontaneity, and self-confidence, Meru is spunky and excitable to boot! She always walks and talks with a perk in her step and an air of optimism, and she never meets a stranger. This can be a problem for those who are quiet or passive in nature, as a conversation started with Meru is difficult to end - she’ll happily chat and twirl around to block one’s escape route if she isn’t finished saying her piece and often invites herself along, assuming everyone automatically wants her company. Even small rejections will not deter her.
Perhaps the only thing that will shut her up is if she is asked about her history - being a Wingly, she is sworn to the secrecy of her species and will fumble over her words, unsure how to respond. Not quick-witted enough to handle questions of this nature on the spot, she usually tries to back-pedal over her words or make a physical exit, preferring to avoid such questions - or situations in which she has lost control - completely.
Other than in-depth questions about herself, the only things that can pop her happy bubble are aggressiveness or complete negativity. Aggression will result in her spunk turning more feisty; she knows how to wield her maul and is not afraid to use it - if someone threatens her or someone she calls a friend, she acts quickly and without recompense. Likewise, if she does not understand a situation or feels she is being insulted for her lack of knowledge, she becomes frustrated and argumentative, as she is unwilling to ever admit being wrong or ignorant. Meru has a short temper and a short attention span; if either of these reaches their end, and she becomes angry or bored, it often results in aggravation or exasperation for any unfortunate soul who happens to be near. Many would say she’s rather immature in this aspect.
On the other hand, if someone actually manages to break through her optimistic bubble to get underneath her skin and point out her flaws, weaknesses, or unacceptable behavior, she can become extremely dejected and depressed - all of her features and demeanor completely deflating when successfully spurned or shunned. Despite her usual air of optimism and eagerness to cheer up a friend when they are feeling down, it is extremely difficult to pull her out of such a rut when she lands in one. Just the right words, in earnest, must be used for her to believe the statement and return to her normal self, but if those words are found, it is as though nothing was ever wrong and her gung-ho attitude will come back to her in full force.
Although she is self-confident, full of herself, and so care-free, if Meru calls someone friend her care runs deeply for them in such a powerful sense that it is almost impossible to dowse. She will do whatever is in her power to cheer her friends up, protect them, and learn from them. Being a Wingly and having always lived in a close-knit environment, she becomes easily attached to others and believes there is good in everyone. If her respect is earned, which is not so difficult a task, she ultimately places all her trust and faith in that person and will do whatever it takes to help them reach their ends.
In a nutshell, Meru is very much the type of person who wears her heart on her sleeve - she has no luck at hiding her inner emotions and whatever she is feeling is obvious to all of those who are around her.
Strengths/Abilities:
Due to her petite stature and years of honing her skills of both flight and dance, Meru’s steps are lithe and give her high agility. She has quick reflexes and can take fast, twirling steps to evade an opponent at a split-second’s notice without missing a beat or finding herself off-balance.
She wields a large hammer, most commonly known as a maul, which is quite weighty; many are surprised at her ability to handle it so expertly but due to years of practice and Wingly strength which is rooted in the ancient magic of her species, she normally has no problems with carrying or using the weapon in the heat of battle. Because most of her attacks use quick, dance-like movements however, there are times when the momentum becomes too great and she may fall over from the force behind her strikes.
Another physical advantage that Meru has, but rarely makes use of, is her wings. However, they are not ever-present, as they are made of an ancient Wingly magic and appear as light rays which are called upon at will. (This picture is not of Meru, but of another Wingly using them: Lenus using her Wings)
Likewise, this ancient Wingly magic allows her control over the elements of light and water, allowing her to send powerful magical attacks at her enemies if her hammer is ineffective. She can also use this to produce a glowing, almost green, light in dark places, which would emanate from her hands. However, due to her need to keep the Wingly species a secret, it is only in the most dire situations - or when she is completely alone - that she would use these powers.
Weaknesses:
Physically, Meru is weak when it comes to raw power - although she wields her weapon well, too much momentum can cause her to fall due to her lack of weight; gravity will win. Lifting things beyond the weight of the hammer is also something beyond her scope of ability, as her muscles are more toned for agility than for pure brawn. Elementally, she is weak to fire and has poor physical defense, as she has little (if any) armor to protect her and, as much as she may deny, her small stature makes her a frail target.
History:
Based on information from the game, it is hard to tell exactly how old Meru is, or how life was for her in the Forest before she left it, so my history information is mainly extrapolation from tidbits or implications from the content of the game itself. I have decided to only give her history up until the point where she is transported to the world where Luministi takes place. (For a more official overview the LoD Wiki - Meru is a somewhat helpful resource, though I feel it is lacking.)
She appears to be around the age of 16 to Humans (both in appearance and personality), but it is implied that she is much older than she lets on. In the Forest of the Winglies, her home - but a small area of Endiness, magically hidden in the Evergreen Forest of Mille Seseau - she has a large network of support. She is the only daughter of her parents who are very supportive and loving; her father often shows a hard exterior, but Meru’s enthusiasm and insistence easily melts it, as he very obviously has a soft spot for her. Her mother is of course very maternal and encourages Meru in thinking and acting in her own way.
While many of the elders are a little surprised at how she goes against the flow and is so outspoken, most are merely amused by her silly antics and are very amiable towards the young Wingly. Although she is quirky and likes to stand against the crowd, preferring to dance and run around instead of using her wings to move about, she has many friends. The Bardel brothers and their younger sister are her closest friends, of course having grown together since childhood.
The most important person in her life, however, is quite possibly Guaraha. Very close in age, the two were inseparable from a young age. He went along with all of her little explorations and adventures and kept her out of trouble and danger when her whimsies threatened to put them at risk of punishment or physical harm. No one in the forest, except perhaps Meru herself, was surprised when he proposed to her. Yet it seems a definitive answer was never given before her curiosity got the better of her.
As stated before, Meru is quite different from the rest of the Winglies residing in the Forest she calls home. She grew tired of being limited to the bounds of her Forest dwelling; she wanted to know more about the world. She had to know what lay beyond the magical barrier between the small Forest the Winglies had sequestered themselves into after losing the great battle against the Humans (and all other species they had enslaved) that was the Dragon Campaign.
Although she was warned heavily against leaving, as it is taboo to leave and would result in permanent exile, her eagerness to know and learn things first hand ultimately wins out. Meru chooses to ignore this commandment of the Winglies, truly believing that when she comes back with all of the stories her experiences of travelling the world will bring her that she will be welcomed with open arms and honored for bringing a change to how her race has been forced to live for thousands of years.
Once she has left the Forest, Meru is amazed at how large the world is and hastily travels to the nearest town of Furni, the water city. Most of Mille Seseau, the country in which the Forest of the Winglies is located, hosts a cold and harsh climate, but due to being on the ocean, Furni has a warm and Mediterranean type of environment. Deciding to explore the rest of Mille Seseau after seeing the rest of the world, upon her return to the Wingly Forest, Meru hitches a ride on the first boat leaving port - headed for the country Tiberoa. The port city of Tiberoa is Donau, the flower city, where Meru is practically forced to make a home, as she has no Human currency by which to provide herself the necessities of living.
Additionally, the world of Humans seems to be teeming with monsters; Meru cannot use her wings to fly and evade them, as that would alert Humans to the continuing existence of Winglies (and keeping that secret is one commandment she has sworn herself to follow), so at first she has no way to protect herself, preventing her from travelling safely or easily.
Her Wingly heritage and knowledge of flight has trained her to be very agile and lithe in steps and movements; using this to her advantage she takes up a profession as a dancer - starting in the streets of Donau and nearby cities before becoming a regular performer at the bar of the flower city itself. As she accumulates money she is able to buy an outfit she feels is more suitable to her career as a dancer, as well as a large maul which she uses to fend off creatures and monsters so that she may safely travel between the cities. Sometimes she incorporates the maul in her more eccentric dances, both to improve her form of fighting and add a new flair to the dance itself. Of course, the hammer is as well decorated and intricately-designed as her dancer’s costume, as Meru would never settle for the plain and simple.
One day Meru is traveling to Fletz, the twin city and capitol of Tiberoa, to perform for a special ceremony taking place in the castle by the King for the birthday of his youngest daughter, Lisa. It is on this short journey that she is taken from Endiness and transported to the town of Luministi.
Canon Point:
Shortly after she first decides to leave the Forest of the Winglies to explore the world of Humans and has taken up her profession as a dancer. (Therefore, before she is actually part of the game, and before she learns that she is chosen to be the Blue-Sea Dragoon.)
First Person Sample:
Unngh...wha-? [she shakes her head rapidly, trying to clear the spots from her vision] Oh, boy! That’s only making it worse! [she holds her head in her hands as her vision clears and she is able to take in her strange surroundings, quickly jumping to her feet and flailing her arms about her while glancing about wildly] This doesn’t look like Tiberoa!
[she scampers about the room, looking for anything familiar when a man with a smiling face pops up behind a strange barrier and begins speaking to her; immediately her hands fly to her hips as she glares at the man with the all-too-cheery attitude] Good morning, YOURSELF! Now where the heck am I?!
[flailing her arms once more and beginning to advance towards the man, as he continues with his speech, completely ignoring the girl in front of him] EXCUSE ME! [not taking notice of his words, her frustration only grows as she continues to be ignored, tapping the barrier between her and the man in front of her]
I asked you where I am! So shut UP already and ANSWER ME!! [producing no result from her actions, the man behind the barrier suddenly disappeared, leaving a black void in his place] HEY! Where do you get off just LEAVING like that?! I DON’T THINK SO!!
[her eyes narrow, all patience gone, as she snatches her maul from its resting place before twirling and whipping it right into the barrier, which instantly shatters from the force, revealing shards of glass and wiring on the inside] ERRRGH! WHERE - in all of Endiness - AM I?!
[realizing the barrier was just some strange sort of box with no people inside of it, she heaves the giant hammer onto her shoulder and takes another look around; eyes landing on the room just beyond she mutters to herself] Well, maybe someone is in here...
[finding no one else in the room beyond, her frustratiion begins to grow again until she eyes the basket on the table and rifles through it, throwing objects out right and left to land on the table or couch nearby until her hand finds a cool, metal device which begins humming at her touch] AUGH! What the heck was that?!
[she jumps back and holds her maul in front of herself, threatening the thrumming creature not to come any nearer as she slowly backs herself out of the room through the door] Gooooood...THING. Just stay riiiiiiiiight there.
[finding herself assured that the strange metal creature is not aggressive, she turns on her heel and heads out the door, determined to figure out where she is - not realizing the C.A.T. finds its own way of attaching itself to her skirt to travel with...]
Third Person Sample:
Meru stood, and not for the first time, staring at the green glowing innards of the cave that led from her Forest home to the rest of Endiness. Most, if not all, of the rest of her peers avoided this area of their home as though it were cursed - some would even go so far as to say it actually was. But not Meru. She had visited this area and stared into that magical barrier, hoping for a glimpse of the world beyond, countless times since she was but a child.
Today was different, though. Today she was going to step through. She crossed her arms and tapped her foot impatiently, Guaraha promised he’d meet me here an hour ago! Where is that no good... She spun around as she heard him flying from behind her; the barely audible, yet high-pitched thrum of his wings indicating his arrival. She twirled about on one foot and looked up at him, flinging her arms out to either side of her head, “And just WHERE have you been?!”
The Wingly before her did not lower his wings and instead stayed levitating in the air just a few feet out of her grasp, averting his gaze from reaching her eyes. Meru rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, “Seriously, Guaraha? You PROMISED me this time. You said we would go TOGETHER!” For years now he had done this, said that he would go with her to explore the rest of the world – experience it with her. And each time he had backed out, somehow talking her out of it as well.
When he proposed to her, just weeks earlier, she hadn’t answered him. She had instead responded with a question of her own, ‘Will you travel all of Endiness with me?’ They had each gone off to explore their separate answers before meeting again a week later, and he had promised he would! But now, she could tell, he was backing out once more.
Frustrated and tired of waiting, Meru twirled about; she turned her back on him as she flung her arms into the air once more, “Whatever! Whether you’re coming or not, I’m SERIOUSLY going this time, Guaraha!” The Wingly female had been feeling too restless lately; on edge. Something big was coming, was going to happen – out there. She knew it. She felt it; she knew the others must, too, but that they were all just ignoring it because they were afraid of change.
But she wasn’t! And she was going to experience the world, and come back with stories that would show them change was good! She heard Guaraha lower himself to the stone behind her, felt as he outstretched his arm to touch her shoulder, but she shrugged him off. “No. I’m not letting you talk me out of it again.”
She heard a muttered response, “I know…” and almost looked back, but instead nodded resolutely. Looking at his face might break her determination, but she knew if she stayed she’d never get her chance to leave. Meru wasn’t ready to settle!
“Then I’ll see you later, okay?” She twirled on one tiptoe, smiling brightly, to face him. His sad eyes simply stared at her blankly, saying what they both knew without words. By the Ancestor’s commandment, it was taboo to leave; to do so meant exile from the forest. But Meru was going to show them it was time to leave those ten-thousand-year commandments in the dust! “Tell everyone I said bye, for now!”
With a wave, she turned again, holding her hand to the barrier – using her Wingly power to create a ripple in the magic; her heart was racing. She could barely contain her excitement. This is it! I’m finally going to see the rest of the world – I almost can’t wait to see the look on my parents’ faces when I come back and tell them all the wonderful stories of my adventures!!
A light pressure from her hand, and she began to slip through the magical force field that had been standing untouched for thousands of years. She thought she heard a strangled voice finally find itself and call out from behind her, but it was too late. An instant, and she was gone – at last setting out to build her own life. To break away from the old ways and move forward from the prejudices of her elders; Meru was going to show everyone how right she’d been all along!
Did you read the rules? Yep yep yep!
